What Is a SWIFT Code?

A SWIFT code (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication), also known as a BIC (Bank Identifier Code), is a unique alphanumeric code that identifies a specific bank or financial institution worldwide. It is the international standard for routing cross-border payments and interbank messages.

SWIFT codes are either 8 or 11 characters long and follow this format:

  • First 4 characters: Bank code (letters only)
  • Next 2 characters: Country code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2)
  • Next 2 characters: Location code (letters or digits)
  • Last 3 characters (optional): Branch code — "XXX" or omitted means head office

For example, CHASUS33 is JPMorgan Chase's head office: CHAS (bank) + US (United States) + 33 (New York).

SWIFT Code FAQs

Yes. SWIFT code and BIC (Bank Identifier Code) are the same thing and the terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to the internationally standardized code assigned by SWIFT to identify banks for cross-border payments. You may also see it called a SWIFT/BIC, SWIFT ID, or ISO 9362 code.

An 8-character SWIFT code identifies the bank's head office (primary branch). An 11-character code includes a 3-character branch suffix that identifies a specific branch. If you use the 8-character code, the transfer will be routed to the bank's head office, which will forward it to the correct branch. When in doubt, the 8-character code usually works.

You can find your bank's SWIFT code in several ways: check your bank statement or online banking portal, call your bank's customer service, or use the lookup table above. SWIFT codes are public information and are the same for all customers of the same bank and branch. Note that SWIFT codes are used primarily for international transfers — for domestic U.S. transfers, you'll need a routing number instead.
