What Is a Routing Number?

A routing number, also known as an ABA routing transit number (RTN), is a unique 9-digit code that identifies a bank or financial institution in the United States. It was established by the American Bankers Association (ABA) in 1910 and is used to process electronic transactions such as direct deposits, wire transfers, and ACH payments.

Every bank or credit union in the U.S. has at least one routing number. Larger banks often have multiple routing numbers assigned by state or region. You can find your routing number on your checks, in your bank's online banking portal, or by using the lookup table above.

How to Find Your Routing Number

1

On your checks

The routing number is the first set of 9 digits printed at the bottom-left corner of your personal checks, before your account number.

2

In your online banking

Log in to your bank's website or mobile app. Your routing number is typically found in account details, settings, or transfer setup pages.

3

On this page

Use the search bar above to find your bank's routing number instantly. We list routing numbers for all major U.S. banks and credit unions.

Routing Number FAQs

A routing number identifies the bank or financial institution, while an account number identifies your specific account at that bank. Routing numbers are 9 digits and are public information — they're the same for all customers in the same region. Account numbers are private and unique to each customer. You need both to set up direct deposits, wire transfers, and ACH payments.

Yes, many large banks use different routing numbers depending on the state or region where you opened your account. For example, Chase has different routing numbers for New York, California, Texas, and other states. Smaller or online-only banks like Ally Bank typically use a single national routing number for all customers.

Sometimes. Some banks use the same routing number for both ACH transfers (direct deposits, bill pay) and wire transfers, while others have separate numbers for each. For example, Chase uses 021000021 for ACH in New York but 028000024 for domestic wire transfers. Always verify with your bank which number to use for your specific transaction type. In the table above, entries are labeled as "ACH," "Wire," or "ACH & Wire" to help you find the right number.
